Bodyguard Update
08/18/2008
The debut of Bodyguard® End Seal and approval by the California State Fire Marshall of Bodyguard siding has reinforced Bodyguard’s reputation as a top-quality, “trouble-free” brand of primed, FSC certified siding, trim and moulding.

End Seal

Available at Truitt & White in either an aerosol spray can or quart-size tin, this VOC compliant solvent-based treatment satisfies the warranty requirement for covering end cuts of Bodyguard siding, moulding and trim products.

“All Bodyguard products have a 30-year warranty when installation recommendations are followed and the end cuts, nail holes and notches are covered with a zinc naphthenate treatment,” says Stuart Toakley, Bodyguard CEO. Clear Wood Preservative and Jasco ZPW Clear Wood Preservative are two other brands of preservative products available at Truitt & White that satisfy the warranty requirement for end seals, but neither are available in a spray can or have End Seal’s distinctive white tint.

“Bodyguard End Seal is tinted white much like a wood stain. On site, it helps builders, supervisors and inspectors confirm which wood has been end treated, and which has not,” says Toakley.

Pro builders have embraced the growing Bodyguard product line since 2004 when its trim boards and facia debuted at Truitt & White. The expanded line now includes siding for exterior applications where the product is not in direct contact with the ground, and a wide range of exterior moulding choices. Truitt & White buyer John Neimeier says Bodyguard products have become top sellers in the East Bay for a number of reasons.

“A survey conducted this past May found that once builders used Bodyguard, they continued to prefer the product line. The reasons were Bodyguard’s overall consistency, high-quality double primed feature, rot-resistance comparable to redwood, and ease of handling compared to PVC trim,” says Neimeier. “It’s great for remodels. Someone can come in with an old piece of redwood or cedar siding and we can usually match that profile with one of the Bodyguard sidings we stock.”

Wildland-Urban Interface

A range of Bodyguard treated sidings are now approved by the California State Fire Marshall for use in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zone.

In March all Bodyguard sidings used in horizontal applications – V-Rustic, Cove, 2-Lap, 3-Lap and Bevel - passed testing in accordance with 2007 amendments to the California Building Code (CBC). Whether installing a deck, or using wood siding in sensitive areas, the new rules impact how to build and what products can be used in areas specified in the Wildland-Urban Interface Building Code.
